What is AI Grounding?

All current LLMs have a general understanding of the world since they were trained on public information that was published on the web. For example, LLMs know what the capital of France is or it can summarize Alice in Wonderland for you.

But what if you want to ask the LLM to summarize your complete email correspondence with a particular customer? The LLM is good at summarizing an email log, but it doesn't have any knowledge of your particular email correspondence. So what you have to do is provide the LLM with the relevant grounding data - that is the email log in this example.

And that's generally true for enterprise AI applications. Such applications need access to company internal grounding data - such as your emails, meeting transcripts, CRM data, etc. The AI application must be able to quickly fetch it and feed it within the prompt to the LLM.

And that's the biggest challenge with enterprise AI. We have noticed that enterprise AI implementations struggle (or even fail), because the required grounding data is inaccessible, incomplete, or not in an AI-ready format.
